I’ve had the pleasure of visiting this ramen spot twice – once when I was absolutely famished and the second time right before getting proposed to. Maybe it’s a special place for me, but setting aside any bias, here’s my honest take on Kinton Ramen. Also, it’s worth mentioning that I’ve only been to the Kinton Ramen on Bay St.
Ambiance and Vibes (8.5/10)
I like the store ambiance, design, and feel. It felt modern yet authentic. It has an approachable vibe and is not intimidating for those who haven’t tried ramen before. Also, the saving grace of the score was its restroom. I love how it’s complete from hand soap to lotion, and even mouthwash is included. First time seeing that in a restaurant. The open kitchen is also great, especially if you’re eating alone. It’s like free entertainment sitting by the bar and waiting for your order.
oh yeah I ate alone on my first time then with my bf now fiancé on the second.
Location and People (8/10)
It was easy to access coming from the go train or Union station, reason why I ate there 2x in a row. The people working there are nice and kind. They are eager to accommodate and fast with their service. You can see how attentive they are and we were checked on asking how our ramen was. You don’t also feel the feeling of getting rushed despite the line forming at the front.
Honestly, you’d be rushed by the line you’ll see upfront, that is if you care about it.
Ramen and Gyoza (7/10)
Despite it being a well-known ramen place with people constantly lining up for it, I wasn’t all that impressed with the broth and noodles. I did try three different ramen at this establishment, and I would grade them differently.
- Pork Spicy Garlic (7/10) – It was good, and the garlic was a really nice touch, but it lacked the depth I was craving in ramen. However, the meat was soft and the vegetables were just right.
- Pork Shoyu (6/10) – This was lighter than the spicy garlic, which I don’t prefer at all. It was my fiance’s, and he liked it. However, the meat was soft and the vegetables were just right. (<- yes, it’s a copy-paste from above)
- Beef Original (8/10) – This was probably my favorite as the beef was soft, and the broth was deeper, maybe because of the beef, but this was the type of ramen I’d prefer. On the other hand, my fiance didn’t like it and would prefer his pork shoyu.
This just goes to show that taste is a preference
The Noodles for the ramen were also excellent and the eggs were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The gyoza were also good.
Price (8.5/10)
They have good prices and deals that they run. Make sure to follow their Instagram for updates. It’s not only ramen for dates but also singles. It was fairly affordable and great for the amount you’re getting. For example, our meal was around $38 with taxes for two that included 2 ramen of our choice and 1 gyoza to share, plus 2 pops. Honestly, it’s a great deal. The other reason why I went again.
Conclusion
It’s not unbelievable ramen but good for the price. So, yeah. I would come back if I was hungry and in the area or if I was feeling for ramen and there was a new flavor.
